PolitiFact Fact-Checkers in 2008: Obama Telling Truth, You Will Keep Your Healthcare Plan

In 2008, before the Affordable Care Act was even enacted, and before Barack Obama was even President, PolitiFact stated that Mr. Obama was telling the truth that people would be able to keep their doctors and healthcare plans under his proposed law.

Of course, this turned out to be completely false. Yet somehow PolitiFact said forcefully when Mr. Obama was running for President that Republicans were lying when they said you wouldn't be able to keep your doctor and your plan.
"His opponents have attacked his plan as "government-run" health care," the article scoffs. "Obama is accurately describing his health care plan here. He advocates a program that seeks to build on the current system, rather than dismantling it and starting over."

Believing that then-Senator Obama's words would be what the actual law would be (as opposed to his actual legislation), Angie Holan concluded, "people who want to keep their current insurance should be able to do that under Obama's plan. His description of his plan is accurate, and we rate his statement True."

PolitiFact presents itself as a non-partisan fact-checking site.
