Bahar Mustafa, a diversity officer at Goldsmiths University, will retain her position at the school despite a number of inflammatory statements.
Ms. Mustafa was first embroiled in controversy after she banned white men from a campus event:
In response to criticisms of her racist acts, Mustafa responded that she cannot be racist, saying, “There have been charges laid against me that I am racist and sexist towards white men. I, an ethnic minority woman, cannot be racist or sexist towards white men, because racism and sexism describe structures of privilege based on race and gender, and therefore women of color and minority genders cannot be racist or sexist, since we do not stand to benefit from such a system.”
Mustafa was then investigated by police for racially malicious communication and for calling for the murder of white men.
In response to these racist, violent statements, a petition was started online to remove Mustafa from her position of diversity officer. To date it has over 21,000 signatures.
In a separate petition created by Goldsmiths students, 185 students called for a vote to get rid of Mustafa.
However, a Goldsmiths Student Union spokesman claimed that this was only "1.9 percent" of the student body and, for that reason, "The petition has therefore failed and so a vote will not take place."
He added, "our rules require three per cent to have signed to trigger a referendum."
The spokesman also stated, "We are looking at how we can address those concerns in dialogue with our members and our trustees, who oversee our work."
